Japanese that doesn’t break the bank, four locations.

I have to admit, when I see an All You Can Eat menu I usually assume that quality is immediately compromised and generally stay away from that venue… However, the owner of Okami Japanese seemed so proud of his four restaurants that I was willing to put aside my hesitation and head across town for an ALL YOU CAN EAT Japanese food experience.

I am glad I did as the experience was the opposite to what I expected. For $32.80 a head, Okami provides an affordable varietal menu of Japanese food that was very good quality. Obviously, the dishes are not going to offer the same finesse as some of the fancier and more upmarket Japanese restaurants in the city, but those restaurants aren’t going to cost you under $35 either! From sushi to gyoza to grilled meat dishes, my dining companions and I ‘oohed and aahed’ over an array of Japanese dishes that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Some stand out dishes were the salmon sashimi, which was great quality for such a low price, an incredible miso eggplant that had been abuzz on Zomato so I knew must be part of my lunch feast, and some tender, melt in your mouth Teriyaki beef. We ordered one round of food joking that we would try more next round… Which we never made it to, as the serving sizes were so generous that the first array of dishes was literally ‘all we could eat’.

This is an excellent option for a variety of diners- from people like my brother who is a garbage disposal and can eat like an absolute horse which can be expensive, to friends or family who want to feast on a budget to Japanese lovers who want to try a bit of everything and not be stuck with a big bill.
Okami has restaurants in Caulfield (where I dined), Footscray, Hampton and Wantirna- all offer this dining option although an ala’carte menu is also available separate from the set price per head option.
