A girlfriend had been telling me to visit SMAK Food House for months. As a Coeliac, SMAK is a godsend for her, as so many of the breakfast options are gluten free and delicious. On visiting this week, I learnt that this is the kind of cafe the intolerant foodie, the big breakfast lover and the health nut could all walk into and find something to love. Whilst SMAK isn’t the easiest South Yarra cafe to find, hidden down a little side street off bustling Chapel St, it is worth wandering off the worn path to find a relaxing, healthy haven for coffee, brunch or lunch with friends or solo.
With a sleek, clean Scandinavian design and a menu that is oh so hard to choose from (do I want the Matcha Waffles? The Dark Chocolate Granola? The Spanner Crab Omelette!?) as well as changing juice specials and cleanish sweet treats, there is something for everyone at this venue.
As a brunch addict, I am immediately drawn to the dish on the menu that I haven’t seen elsewhere and couldn’t go past the Activated Charcoal and Broad Bean Falafels. Accompanied by cauliflower, chickpeas, kale, tahini yoghurt and pomegranates, this was delicious, super filling and felt nourishing.
My friend loved the Greens, Nuts and Seeds, another super healthy breakfast option, but packed with flavour and filling enough to keep you going all day.
The name SMAK comes from the Swedish word for ‘taste’, and in both the venue and the food, taste is something they definitely are not lacking.
Have a delicious (and healthy!) day,
Please note, Foodie Melbourne dined as a guest of SMAK Food House but all opinions are genuine.
